About Me

Hi! I’m Jackson. I am a young enthusiast who is always learning and always exploring! With my macro lens I photograph insects, spiders, and other hidden life in the leaf litter—sharing the tiny details most people never notice. There is nothing I enjoy more than pointing my camera at an insect and snapping the shutter. And sharing those photos I take is why I take them. I am a Christian, and I believe that there is a God who made every little Insect with divine attention to detail and a creativity that puts the greatest architects and artists that ever lived to shame. That design and detail is what I attempt to share on this website.

I am also very into identifying the insects and other arthropod relatives I find. I love sharing the knowledge I have gained about arthropods with you and educating the public about these sadly overlooked, mistrusted, and often hated little critters. While I make all arthropods my study, I do have specific areas of expertise. The vast majority of my knowledge is currently restricted to insects, and inside of that I classify myself as a Dipterist (fly expert). I would love to branch out more, but I am currently putting most of my time into studying flies and identifying them online.

I take a lot more photos than I display here, but I post pretty much all of them that can be identified to iNaturalist. See my iNat account. I am also an editor for one of, if not the most, scientifically accurate website for North American Arthropods. See my BugGuide account. I identify thousands of other peoples’ photos on both of these sites, and they have have been invaluable in my journey of knowledge from a complete amateur to what I am today. I found that the best way to learn the insects is to simply start identifying them. As soon as I started researching specific insects to identify for other people, I had a foothold from which to branch out into the rest of the class. I usually didn’t have to make a conscious effort to learn names and relationships; I just picked them up as I went, and then using that new knowledge to identify photos was an essential part of cementing them in my mind.
